Panchaali The Princess of Peace by Saniya Inamdar

Have you read any of the Indian epics? Do you like reading mythology fictions?
_______
"Like the lioness I had emerged out of the fire into an unknown world holding my brother’s hands, I stood up again like a lioness holding the visions of my dreams and my dignity to face this known yet mighty strange world again!" - Draupadi
_______

Panchaali the princess of peace by author Saniya Inamdar is the book that I finished rsafing lately and honestly I liked reading it. It is a mesmerizing read for the fact that her author paints the picture of one of the most iconic woman characters of Mahabharata, Draupadi in another light.

She was the one who was at the core of the war of Mahabharata. From the very childhood the author was captivated by the depth of the character of Panchaali. In her mind she always questioned the validation of the descriptions with which our epic portrays her image in established notions. And if she was what she had been showed in the ink and paper for thousands of years, why did the most noble of all, become her friend?  Krishna considered her as his Sakhi. This is a valid question.

Krishna's presence has been blessed to the ones who are purest, most innocent and honest in their hearts. This contradicts what epics describe her as proud, kind of whore who slept with five princes, rude person that her birth was solely for the purpose of seeding the epic war of revenge and again helpless when she was getting disrobed by the Kauravas of her dignity.

But what makes this story beautiful is that here the author creates a parallel universe where everything is same only that here Draupadi has self aware and takes mindful and different decsions. Here she urged for peace and this brings in changes as a strong minded woman. I loved the plot. The fact that she rejects marrying the five pandavas changes the full scenario.  The best parts were the conversations between Krishna and Panchaali about how she was trying to get clarity about her divine non-humanexistence and even some deep life questions that we as readers can apply in our daily lives. It's philosophical and spiritual aspects makes you get absorbed . I liked insights into more mythological stories of Her and her brother's origin, Prince Nal, Princess Damayanti and the swan, Vishwamitra and Menaka and many more. Lastly the poem that retells the story of Mahabharata in verses is enchanting. I suggest this book to all. Mostly mythology enthusiasts. The atmospheric writing makes all the difference with its ornamentations yet lucid descriptions.  You will find this story to be extremely gripping.
