Why We Crave the Creepy: A Dive into "Wyrd Words" by "Grandfather Hu"

Dare to discover why we’re drawn to what chills us? This book whispers the answer. If you're an avid reader or movie lover drawn to horror, eerie sci-fi, or mystery, this book is a great guide to understanding the psychology behind those interests.

Wyrd Words by Grandfather Hu is a personal and thoughtful look at what makes horror stories powerful.  Grandfather Hu, a fictional radio host created by Dr. Timothy Fox in Taiwan, became his voice for exploring the strange and the scary. Born from memory, teaching, and borderland experiences, Hu now guides readers through the haunted corners of storytelling. Through his own experiences, he shows how fear has always been a part of human life and storytelling.

This book helped me understand why scary tales matter, not just for fun, but for what they reveal about us deep inside. It proves be a quite insightful read.  Blending personal stories, cultural critique, and academic insight, it explores horror's emotional and philosophical roots, especially body horror I am noticed even in movies, while connecting it to childhood memories, social issues, and the broader genre of speculative fiction.

Many horror stories show that our body deeply affects our mind. Unlike other genres, horror embraces the idea that changes in the body can change thoughts and feelings. Stories like The Metamorphosis- if you have read it your will notice, likewise books like The Fly, and Altered States explore how body transformations reshape identity and challenge traditional views of the psyche.

Even lullabies carry hints of our morbid, existential nature. It’s striking to realize how horror has always been a part of human development, shaping our minds from early childhood.

I enjoyed how he explored his own mind while asking why he was so drawn to the horror genre. His childhood, raised by old-world European grandparents, and his thrill-seeking teenage years all seemed connected.

It felt like an opportunity for me to explore my own mind too, since I love horror movies. My favorite genres are horror and extraterrestrial films. There are reasons why I’m drawn to them, they offer constant excitement for a curious and impatient mind like mine.

These stories make me think about possible realities and feed my belief that there are things beyond what our five senses can detect.
I loved how the book mentions popular horror and mystery films, many of which I’ve watched and enjoyed.

It’s a treat for anyone curious about the human mind, and why we’re drawn to horror. It connects culture, entertainment, and psychology in a fascinating way.
